Following an announcement from Public Telecommunications Minister Cathy Hughes, that she is engaging Guyana’s two telecommunication giants – GTT and Digicel – about their poor 4G network services, Digicel on Tuesday said that the issue has been resolved on their end.Hughes had indicated that the disappointing 4G network service citizens have been provided with will be rectified by the end of the year. She said that she has spoken with both telephone companies and they had promised to fix it.However, Digicel said on Tuesday that initially the company was experiencing some interference within its allocated spectrum range but that issue has now been resolved. “With the launch 4G Smart Data Bundles Plans, including free talk and text and a lower cost of megabytes, we certainly are offering better value to the customers with our 4G plans,” an official from Digicel said when contacted for a comment, noting that they would be engaging the Minister on Thursday for further discussions.“The feedback from our customers has been largely positive to the whole 4G experience. Once the Telecoms Bills comes into force, we look forward to bring additional products and value to Guyana,” the company added.Since GTT and Digicel rolled out their 4G network services, many persons have complained that the services provided are less than satisfactory.Earlier this year, GTT launched its “Free Basic 4G Services”. It was designed to give people free 4G access to information from more than 20 local and international websites, including Wikipedia, Guyana Learning Channel.com, google.gy, gina.gov.gy, and all major news sites in Guyana.Digicel rolled out its 4G smart bundles, which consisted of data bundles and free talk and texts to all local numbers, which will be available to all postpaid and prepaid Digicel customers.
…“they have a vendetta against us!” By Ramona LuthiWhile still coping with the disadvantage of being banned from displaying their items on the ground in front of their stalls, vendors operating outside the Stabroek Market are now faced with another hurdle, this time a hefty fine of $5000 and more imposed by the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC), for hanging goods on their stalls.Vendors display their items by hanging them on their stalls in front of the Stabroek MarketVendors who spoke with Guyana Times on Tuesday described the fine as the “newest implementation to make our lives harder”, having to face the seizure of any goods found hanging on their stalls. The vendors complained that they were not given any prior notice of the new fine and, as such, many of them had their goods confiscated by city officials. One fruit vendor, who identified himself as “Tom Cruise”, complained that the new rule was another dent to his business as it restricted him from displaying what he had to offer his customers.“Now you can’t display nothing. We got the oranges; you does hang up the oranges on the stand. People do want see things on display. People can’t know we got orange like this. They seize three bags of oranges the other day. Three bags. A bag a orange is $260. They want you pay $5000 to collect it back. I left it right deh. It ain’t mek sense,” he complained.Another vendor called “Carol” said employees of the market office confiscated a total of 97 pairs of slippers from her stall, on three different occasions. She said she felt suffocated while plying her trade since this was her only means of earning a living. She said the new rule was enforced to spite vendors who speak out against the authoritarian behaviour of some city officials, particularly those managing the markets.“Ninety-seven pairs of slippers they seize. I real fed up. I’m running out of options to sell here, man. We can’t do anything. We losing sale fast. We got bills to pay and they just doing this fuh take spite on me. They have a vendetta against us! Them same people just trying to bully we for their own gain,” the frustrated woman said.Other vendors who ply their trade in front of the Stabroek Market called on the City Council to look into the matter and provide a solution whereby they would be allowed to earn a living without having to face unnecessary hassles. When contacted, Deputy Mayor Sherod Duncan said he had no information on the matter.Early in May, despite opposition from vendors who ply their trade in the historic Stabroek Market Square, the M&CC moved in and dismantled some 130 stalls. The Council had informed the vendors that they would be required to move and set up a temporary location south of Parliament Building on Hadfield Street for them. The Council said this move was part of its efforts to “clean up” the area and restore it to its former glory.
BALDWIN PARK – The Baldwin Park school board Tuesday approved a charter school that would serve homeless students. Opportunities for Learning, a charter school already serving at-risk middle and high school students, will expand to accommodate what officials expect to be about 200 students to enroll. The district has already identified more than 70 students now enrolled in public school who are homeless or displaced. Nearly 90 percent of students in the district are part of the free or reduced-price lunch program. Mark Skvarna, district superintendent, said the charter school could open this spring. The board renewed a five- year contract with the charter school in January. The district will oversee the charter and assist with administering assessment tests for English learners. Under the federal McKinney- Vento Act, children who are homeless are entitled to public education and schools must remove any barriers to their enrollment. Charters are funded by the state, but control their budget and determine what the curriculum will be. There are now more than 600 charters in the state, and Baldwin Park appears to have approved the first charter serving homeless students, officials said. The five cities with the greatest number of homeless children are Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Minneapolis and Houston, according to the ERIC Clearinghouse on Urban Education. The OFL charter school for the homeless will serve students in the seventh through 12th grade. Because it is tailored specifically to this type of population, the charter also will provide students with resources such as food, clothing and counseling. That individual attention is needed and something the public school system is unable to provide right now, said Jack White, school board president. “These kids can get lost in the system,” White said. OFL officials said that administrators onsite will be active in assisting families with parent workshops; transportation will also be provided to students through a learning center on wheels. email@example.com (626) 962-8811, Ext. 2108 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Troy Deeney insists Watford would welcome Emmanuel Adebayor to Watford – if he knuckles down and does his job.The Hornets are being linked with a January move for the Togo striker, who is a free agent after leaving Tottenham in the summer. The 31-year-old is a proven Premier League performer, but he also has a reputation for being a disruptive influence around a club. And Deeney admits he would not someone to come in and upset the spirit at Vicarage Road. The Hornets captain told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “He’s a good player, but there have been question marks over his temperament.“Our owner’s not been naïve enough to bring in any bad eggs, so I’d like to think they would assess that angle before they did bring him in.“But his quality is there for everyone to see and, if you can get that out of him, you’ll have a top, top player on your hands.”
